Dynamics 365 on-premises SQL Server Linux OS

Dear All,

I had a request for the following.

A customer would like to implement Dynamics 365 Sales Enterprise on premises using the dual rights in CSP.

Now, they would like to install this on a server running a Linux OS with an SQL server on top.

My asks

- Is this in any way possible ?

- What do they take into account to get this working

- What on licensing ? Do they only need the SQL server ? I would think they will also need to add the CAL associated with this ?

Kind Regards,

Adriaan

    Hey Adriaan,

Dynamics 365 customer engagement formerly known as Dynamics CRM has not been known to be tested or supported in order to make it work with SQL instance hosted on Linux OS. We know that Linux OS can be bounded with an Active Directory Domain and some popular flavors of it can host SQL server installation as well however, this can not be enough as there are much more than that when it comes to interacting with the SQL endpoint for CRM web application.

If you read this documentation which talks about the minimum privileges required for service accounts to be used for CRM deployment, you would be able to understand how much things relies on Windows Platform as a base OS ::

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/customerengagement/on-premises/deploy/security-considerations-for-microsoft-dynamics-365#:~:text=Dynamics%20365%20for%20Customer%20Engagement%20is%20designed%20so%20that%20its,reduce%20the%20likelihood%20of%20exploitation.

The recommendation would always be to use the supported software as a base platform for provisioning Dynamics 365 server deployments.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/customerengagement/on-premises/deploy/software-requirements-for-microsoft-dynamics-365-server

As an admin out of curiosity to check if you can make it work with SQL server hosted on a popular flavor of Linux OS, you may give it a try but I doubt that the installation would work out.

Please mark my comment as answered if this helps.

    Thanks,

    Saurabh
