Hi All
I'm exploring ideas to build a custom externally facing portal (without using power pages). What are the options for security configuration? Is using contacts and linking to external users still the best option?
I have the same question (0)

    Hello @Samantha73,

If you are planning to develop Custom Portal and not going to use Power pages than you will have to build security functions on your own.

    • Power page provides options to invite contacts & allow them to use portal
    • Contact who is going to login into portal can see only records owned under his/her account
    • Additional there are views, customize table permissions & other features like attachments etc
I would suggest you go through what features you are planning to implement & than decide which options are best. You should also evaluate on functional vs technical basis on your requirements.

    Hello @Samantha73,
You can indeed build a custom portal that uses Dataverse for data storage without relying on Power Pages, implementing your own authentication system for user sign-up and login. After authentication, you simply map each portal user to a corresponding Contact record in Dataverse (by matching with an existing Contact via email or creating a new Contact if necessary), ensuring your app can securely associate sessions with the right Contact. However, be mindful of licensing considerations: connect to Dataverse from your web app using a service account, as connecting with each user's identity can significantly increase license costs. Also, custom portals are subject to service throttling and Web API call entitlements, which limit the number of API calls you can make—this is more restrictive than with Power Pages. I’m building a similar solution with Vue.js connecting to Dataverse, so I'd recommend keeping scalability and these potential constraints in mind as you design your portal.
