Discussion Summary
This FAQ provides answers to frequently asked questions about the AI technology that's used in the Discussion Summary which displays in forum threads. It includes key considerations and details about how the AI is used, how it was tested and evaluated, and any specific limitations.
What is Discussion Summary in Dynamics 365 Community?
Discussion Summary is a feature that provides a concise, AI-generated summary of a forum question and its replies right on each forum thread. It helps users quickly understand the key points of a discussion without having to read the entire thread. The summary is automatically created when a thread with more than one reply is viewed and is updated whenever new replies are added or existing posts are edited. This feature is currently available only to authenticated users and supports English-language discussions during its public preview phase.
What are the capabilities of the Discussion Summary in Dynamics 365 Community?
The Discussion Summary feature offers the following capabilities:
- Summarizes entire discussions: It generates a concise overview of the original question and all replies in a forum thread.
- Auto-generated on demand: The summary is created automatically when a discussion thread (with more than one reply) is opened.
- Updates with new activity: If the thread is updated — for example, with a new comment or an edit — the summary will be regenerated the next time the page is loaded.
- Privacy-aware: The summary excludes any personal or sensitive user information.
- Persistent until updates: Once generated, the summary is stored and reused unless the thread changes.
How is the Discussion Summary in Dynamics 365 Community evaluated? What metrics are used to measure performance?
Discussion Summary feature underwent substantial testing before it was released. It relies on user feedback to report inappropriate content. If you encounter inappropriate generated content, report it to Microsoft by using this feedback form: Report abuse. Your feedback helps improve the functionality.
What are the limitations of Discussion Summary in Dynamics 365 Community? How can users minimize the impact of these limitations?
The Discussion Summary feature is currently in public preview, and as such, it has a few known limitations:
- Posts with inline images behave unexpectedly in AI summarization or moderation : This behavior is a known limitation in our AI systems. The current models prioritize text-based content and do not fully support embedded media such as inline images, attachments, or non-text elements.
- Language support: Summarization currently supports only English-language discussions.
- Token limit: The model can process up to ~111,000 tokens (approximately 400,000 characters). If a thread exceeds this limit, only the content within the limit is considered, and parts of the discussion may be excluded from the summary.
- AI limitations: As with all AI-generated content, summaries may occasionally miss nuances or emphasize less relevant points. The generated content should never be used without manual review or supervision.
