Types of ERP and eCommerce Integration

Different types of ERP and eCommerce Integration methods are available in the market. Businesses implement integration solutions on the basis of their requirements and goals.  This blog covers some of the common types of ERP and eCommerce integration methods:

Two-way Integration:

In two-way integration the flow of data is bi-directional. This type of integration transfer data between two platforms means from the ERP system to the eCommerce site and vice versa.  As a result, this helps to achieve end-to-end synchronization. Moreover, It ensures that data is consistent and up to date in both systems at any given point in time. The common examples of operations in this type of integration include:

Complete Order Processing: Order placed on the eCommerce platform will be created as it is in an ERP system and after processing in an ERP, fulfillment uploads to the eCommerce site.

Inventory level update & adjustment: Current inventory levels update to the web store from ERP. Also, when web order comes in ERP, inventory levels adjust accordingly.

Syncing Capability: Two way integrations usually provide syncing capability between the already existing data on the two platforms. So, the transfer of information becomes possible between the entities after integration.

One-way Integration:

As the name suggests flow of data takes place in only one direction, either from the ERP system to the eCommerce platform or from the eCommerce platform to the ERP system. For example, product creation and information update takes place in the ERP system and then pushed to the eCommerce platform.

Middleware Integration:

In this type of integration, middleware system acts as a bridge or data container between the ERP system and the eCommerce platform.  First data goes to that middleware system then transfer accordingly. The middleware system ensures the accurate data transfer between the two systems in real-time.

Batch Processing:

This type of integration allows data transfer between the two systems in batches and at a scheduled time. This method is useful for businesses that do not require real-time data synchronization and prefer bulk processing.

Point-to-Point Integration:

This type of integration is more like a simple connector. It involves connecting the ERP system and the eCommerce platform directly. Without the use of any middleware system and offering any scalability. Hence, this method is good for simpler integrations.

The choice of integration type and method depends on the specific need of the business, also the complexity of the systems being integrated is considered. Though there are different types of ERP and eCommerce Integration available but it's important to implement the right integration method that meets the requirements. Also the integration solution needs to be set up properly for complete data synchronization between the eCommerce platform and an ERP system.
