Carsten Groth mscrm Profile Picture Carsten Groth mscrm 2,085

Thanks for your feedback on my previous article around comparing Adoption Frameworks and sharing my thoughts from customer conversations. I was asked to add the Power BI angle to it and more or less complete the Power Platform view this way.

Adoption Frameworks comparison

New to Power Platform, you might ask, why Power BI has a „spin-off“, Power BI related Adoption Framework and of course this adding more questionmarks to the puzzle I talked about in my previous article. Well, in fact it´s not only a Power BI Adoption Framework, there´s the Adoption Roadmap in place additionally, which doesn´t make it an easier task to explain.

Though, let me try. If you remember Power BI as a product placement was initial released to public in July 2011 and therefore existing before the Power Platform. It shouldn´t be a surprise seeing an Adoption Framework which started as a community project mainly to serve implementation partners. Over the course of time, it evolved and covered more community hot topics. Nevertheless, an Adoption Roadmap was kicked-off additionally to focus on the why and what of adopting Power BI. Same as to the Power Platform there´re additional whitepapers offered covering topics of interest or drilling deep and providing more context on individual topics.

Should a Power Platform adoption team study the Power BI adoption roadmap (and) framework additionally?

I´ve talked to customers implementing and adopting the Power Platform in general and asked for their view on this:

The Power BI adoption roadmap provided us additional context on data culture and helped improving our Center of Excellence

Adoption Team Member

While implementing a Center of Excellence around all topics and modules of Power Platform, extending our Power Platform Adoption team with context on Power BI helped growing fusion teams and drove data, apps and flows into next level

Manufacturer’s Adoption Team Member

I shared both statements with you not because they are pro aspects to study additional material. The main reason for me was to motivate you to think as being a scientist. When people ignore an advice, it isn´t always because they disagree with it.

Comparing the Power BI Adoption Framework and Roadmap (PBIAF) with Power Platform Adoption Framework (PPAF), in terms of the modules you do find a lot of similarities. In fact, modules like Enablement and Community inside PBIAF can be layered with the Nurture module in PPAF. And modules like CoE, Govern or Adopt content-wise can be seen as complementary.

Nevertheless, data culture inside companies is somewhat a specific journey and needs special attention. For that, Data Culture and Own & Manage are great modules to review and consider when building your individual adoption program and journey. This also is reflected in the main audience the Power BI Adoption Framework or Adoption Roadmap is designed for.

Microsoft itself has some work to be done when adoption.microsoft.com should become their new central landingpage for documentation around adoption topics. That of course shouldn´t stop adoption teams to consider studying material that is available, be a scientist and explore what works best for your company while on your adoption journey.

Enjoy, until then,…
