Start quietly when selecting Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software

Community Member Profile Picture Community Member

Selecting ERP software isn’t something you can decide to do today and make a purchase decision by the end of the month.  It takes time, a lot of time to properly organize this project and it takes knowledge, software selection knowledge that many people simply do not have.

In all likelihood it may have been five years or more since you were involved in an ERP software selection project.  In that time there have been huge changes in ERP software functionality as well as ERP business reporting.  If you haven’t been keeping up with what’s happening in the industry, it’s unlikely you even know what’s possible in terms of what functionality may help you improve your operations.  This lack of knowledge may be one of the prime reasons why many ERP software selection projects do not fully achieve their initial objectives.

This blog is not designed to give you a complete step-by-step selection methodology.  Instead we want to help you understand how to start an ERP software selection project.  That’s why we used the term “quietly” in the title.  First and foremost, accept the fact that your lack of knowledge may be a major impediment to successfully completing what could prove to be a very complex project.

There are a few rules you should consider when selecting a new ERP solution.

First, rather than plunging off the cliff, focus on getting people involved in the process.  Just talking to each other is a good beginning.  Learn from their practical experience.

Second, acquire the knowledge you need to manage such a project.

Third, understand what’s possible in today’s ERP software (functionality as well as business reporting).

Fourth, partner with a reseller who is willing to help you understand how to make this project a success and who will therefore become your trusted business advisor now and in the future.
