Responsive Web Design: Your Answer for Mobile

responsive web designMashable asked 12 entrepreneurs what website features should be avoided by small business owners; one suggestion noted by these experts was that “m.dot” sites are a thing of the past. An “m.dot” site redirects users to a mobile-friendly version of a website. While this method was a great way to accommodate various screens sizes in the past, a better way to create user-friendly browsing across different devices is by implementing responsive web design.

What is responsive web design?
In order to respond to the many different devices used by consumers, those in the field of web design and development can use responsive web design. This technology takes one URL, one version of the content on that website as well as the singular code used to create it and using CSS3 media queries, creates a website that automatically responds to user’s device. This means resolution, image size, videos and a website’s navigation all resize and reorganize in order to provide a user-friendly experience regardless of the device.

Why is responsive web design important?
User experience is critical. Responsive web design provides the best way to accommodate many different screen sizes. A website that incorporates this type of web design is also a long-term fix to the challenge of continuously developing a website that will display properly alongside constant advances in technology that lead to the creation of new web-enabled devices.
It is also recommended by Google that a website incorporate responsive web design and is referred to as an industry best practice. While there is no proof that this alone with increase a website’s visibility on search engine results pages, it will provide optimum user experience and that is an SEO benefit.

A website that can respond and display appropriately no matter the device is easier to manage. Before, when an “m.dot” redirect was used, it required webmasters to create a second version of a website. Since responsive web design uses technologies like HTML 5 and CSS3 media queries, webmasters can just create one version of a website. That means just one set of content to manage and update.

Stop managing multiple versions of one site and instead design a responsive website. This will be easier to manage, will provide the best user experience and is a long-term solution to accommodating the ever-changing devices people use to browse the web.
