How to Import BOM and Routing Information into Business Central

In manufacturing and distribution industries, maintaining accurate Bill of Materials (BOM) and routing information is crucial for effective production planning and management. For users transitioning from Microsoft Dynamics NAV to Business Central, or simply needing to update their system with new BOM data, it’s important to follow the correct procedures to avoid common pitfalls such as import errors. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to import BOM and routing data into Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

Step 1: Import BOM and Routing Headers First

The first critical step in the process is to import the BOM and routing headers. This sets the foundation by ensuring that the main identifiers for your BOMs and routings, such as BOM number and routing number, are registered in the database. This step is crucial because it establishes reference points for the subsequent detailed entries.

Why This Order Matters: If you attempt to import headers and lines simultaneously, the system may not recognize the headers when it tries to link them with the lines. Since the headers aren’t yet committed to the database at the time of this combined import, the system will generate errors indicating that it cannot find the referenced header numbers.

Step 2: Apply Changes to Ensure Headers Are in the Database

After importing the headers, apply the changes to ensure that these entries are fully integrated into the database. This action solidifies the presence of the BOM and routing numbers in the system, setting the stage for the next import phase.

Step 3: Import BOM Lines and Routing Lines in a Separate Package

Once the headers are securely in place and recognized by the database, proceed with importing the BOM lines and routing lines. These lines contain the detailed data for each BOM and routing, including component details, quantities, sequences, and operational steps necessary for production.

Importing BOM and routing information into Business Central requires careful planning and execution to ensure data integrity and system stability. By following these steps, users can effectively update their system without encountering disruptive errors, thus maintaining seamless production operations.
