Microsoft Azure – Where did the name come from?

CRMInnovation.com Profile Picture CRMInnovation.com

I was always a little curious on how Microsoft settled on the name of Azure. If you aren’t familiar with what I am talking about : Microsoft Azure, formerly known as Windows Azure, is Microsoft’s public cloud computing platform. It provides a range of cloud services, including those for compute, analytics, storage and networking.

I always thought that the word Azure came from the deep blue stone that is common in the middle east.

However, there seems to be another possibility that came to my attention today. If you are a world traveler you probably know about the Azure Window of Malta, I didn’t.

Apparently it’s quite famous but unfortunately according to a news report today it has collapsed into the Sea after a storm.

The site was a big tourist attraction.

It was also used in television and moves as a backdrop like in the Game of Thrones.
