Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2017 and Azure
Hello, everyone. My name is Christos Pittis, and I am a Microsoft Dynamics NAV Consultant. In this episode, I am going to show you how to deploy Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2017 in Microsoft Azure Cloud Platform.
Microsoft Azure is a cloud computing service created by Microsoft for building, testing, deploying, and managing applications and services through a global network of Microsoft-managed data centers.
Open your browser and type https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/free/ so to get a 30-day free trial account.
As soon as you get access to the Azure portal, go to the Marketplace and search “Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2017”.
Click on it.
This image contains a pre-configured demonstration installation of Microsoft Dynamics NAV that you can reconfigure for production purposes, or extend to a stunning demonstration environment that is integrated with Office 365 and other Microsoft products in just a few clicks.
In the “Select a deployment model” option, select Resource Manager. The most important benefit of the Resource Manager Deployment Model is that you can deploy, manage, and monitor all the services for your solution as a group, rather than handling these services individually.
For better understanding about Resource Manager vs. Classic Deployment read the following article https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-resource-manager/resource-manager-deployment-model
Now hit the Create button and go through the setup process in order to create a virtual machine. There are 4 steps:
1. Basics – Configure basic settings
2. Size – Choose virtual machine size
3. Settings – Configure optional features
4. Purchase – Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2017
1. Basics
Name = This is the name of the virtual machine and also part of the server name. Must be unique.
VM Disk Type = Select HDD but in a production environment, you most probably going to select SSD.
Premium Disks (SSD) are backed by solid-state drives and offer consistent, low-latency performance. They provide the best balance between price and performance and are ideal for I/O-intensive applications and production workloads. Standard disks (HDD) are backed by magnetic drives and are preferable for applications where data is infrequently accessed.
Username and password = are to be used in the RDS
Subscription = Select Free Trial or a paid subscription (after the free trial expires)
Resource Group = Create a new Resource Group
Location = Select the nearest data center to your office.
2. Size
Recommended sizes are determined by the publisher (Microsoft) of the selected image based on hardware and software requirements.
Disk Type, vCPUs, Memory (GB)
In my example, I am selecting A1 Standard since the aim is to deploy a demo Cronus database.
3. Settings
Availability Set = Create one
Availability Set increase the availability and reliability of your Virtual Machine solutions on Azure using a capability called Availability Sets. Availability sets ensure that the VMs you deploy on Azure are distributed across multiple isolated hardware clusters. Doing this ensures that if a hardware or software failure within Azure happens, only a subset of your VMs will be impacted and that your overall solution will remain available and operational from the perspective of your customers using it.
Disk Type = for my demo example I am selecting HDD
Use Managed Disks = Yes
Azure Managed Disks simplifies disk management for Azure IaaS VMs by managing the storage accounts associated with the VM disks.
Leave other options as is.
4. Purchase
Go through the Terms of Use and place a checkmark in the permission box.
Finally, click on the Purchase button.
Go to Virtual Machines and wait until the status is set to “Running.”
Click on it and then click the Connect button at the top. You will be prompted to save the RDP shortcut on your computer.
Click to open an RDP session and insert your credentials so to log into the virtual machine. Once you access the windows environment, click the Start Menu to locate the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2017 application.
Once you open the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2017 application, do not forget to grand SUPER permissions to the user.
