Dynamics 365 & Power Platform – 2023 release wave 1 plans

Today, Microsoft released the new plans for 2023 release wave 1. These plans will tell you about the short-term investments to be released by Microsoft for Dynamics 365 and the Power Platform. Microsoft is releasing these plans twice a year to indicate what they are working on. In this post, you will find the links to the 2023 wave 1 plans and some of the highlights mentioned in these plans.

2023 release wave 1 plans

In the two release plans, Microsoft reveals a lot of new upcoming features. These features are planned to be released between April 2023 and September 2023. Again, a lot of new features announced to be released. You can choose to read them online or download the PDF version. You can find the plans here:

My main area of focus in this blog is on the Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations features. You can read a short summary below.

Dynamics 365 Finance

Where Microsoft released previews for vendor invoice automation and OCR processing, the features will become generally available in the foreseeable future. There are more great topics which will be brought by the Finance team.

To be able to keep the database in a healthy condition, there will be an archival option included in the current plan. Data can be archived in a Dataverse environment. The feature is expected to be released as a preview in April.

Particularly, I’m enthusiastic about the financial tags feature and the ledger settlements improvement to allow for partial settlements. In some implementations, partial settlements were achieved with help of customization in the past. When combining the thought for financial tags and ledger settlements, the tags can help automate the settlements.

Also good news from the globalization team. There is an effort to include localization for 7 LATAM countries: Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Besides the support for Dynamics 365 in more countries, there are investments for multiple Tax ID reporting for more countries and a single API for tax calculation integrations.

Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management

Like the Finance team, also in Supply Chain Management, there is a focus on archiving data. History for inventory transactions and sales orders are expected to be moved to a Dataverse environment. Collaboration between Dynamics 365 SCM and Dynamics 365 Sales is also one of the focus areas. Where the applications reside on physical different platforms, improvements will be done to support an end-to-end process for Prospect to Cash.

It is also interesting to see what more value the Inventory Visibility add-in will bring to the end users.

Warehouse management is generating a lot of individual inventory transactions. Introducing new warehouse inventory transactions will reduce the number of regular inventory transactions.

Dynamics 365 Human Resources

For Human Resources, there are new features announced related to bulk editing in benefits management, integration with learning management providers, and integration with resource management.

Cross app capabilities

Microsoft is working on a convergence story to bring the F&O apps closer to the Power Platform. In the release notes, you can read about One Dynamics One Platform. Read about the One transaction initiative where you can manage to update records in both F&O and Dataverse in a single transaction ensuring consistency.

One batch will introduce the option to schedule F&O background processes using Power Automate. Additionally, some efforts were done to improve the performance of virtual tables.

Usually, the April and October releases are the moments where Microsoft is cleaning up deprecated features and obsolete objects. Some DLLs might be deleted or updated to a more recent version. Ensure you will get hold of the preview releases in time to check if your customizations are still compatible or if you need to adjust them to ensure they will continue to work in the future.
