Big data will improve healthcare delivery, but how?
The healthcare industry has been in the news a lot lately. While the coverage is largely surrounding a political debate concerning public healthcare, the industry is seeing a major transformation in more ways than one. While the craze surrounding big data has touched just about every industry, including healthcare, many professionals in the industry say healthcare has hardly scratched the surface of big data and analytics’ potential. A recent study from the Society of Actuaries, Healthcare Decision Makers’ Perspective on Big Data, shows that the business side of healthcare has begun to realize the potential benefits of analytics, but many are looking into how big data will improve healthcare delivery. In other words, how can big data help improve the way doctors treat patients?
“The key question is how do we take the massive amount of information and translate it into healthcare delivery,” said Robert Pearl, CEO of the Permanente Medical Group and The Mid-Atlantic Medical Group. “We have to begin by asking the right questions in order to get the right information and insights from the data. That process has begun. ”
Here some of the more interesting statistics from the study:
- 87 percent of survey respondents expect big data to have impact on the future of the business.
- 45 percent say they are currently experiencing substantial benefits.
- 84 percent say they have difficulty finding staff with Big Data optimization skills.
- 45 percent said they plan to hire more skilled staff within the next year.
While most healthcare providers and payers believe big data will improve healthcare business and delivery, exactly how it will do so remains to be seen. However as with any facet of information technology, things can change in the blink of an eye. Despite the apparent talent shortage, decision makers can get a jump on the competition now by deploying an enterprise level accounting solution with business intelligence built in.
