Microsoft CRM 4.0 & SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services on the same server
Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 which was released at the end of 2007, so it worked really well (tested more) on Windows 2003, SQL Server 2005, Small Business Server 2003 environments. However, now a days, I see more and more deployments of Microsoft CRM 4.0 on Windows 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008, and Small Business Server 2008.
I'd recommend reviewing the following Microsoft articles to help:
â–ª Support for Microsoft CRM 4.0 on Windows Server 2008
â–ª Support for running Microsoft CRM 4.0 together with Microsoft SQL Server 2008
â–ª Installing Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 on Small Business Server 2008
For folks that want to setup an environment in which both Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services are on the same server (for small deployments or test machine) - you will encounter the following error during the reports installation section (SBS 2008 environments are OK):
This is due to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services NOT relying on IIS for accessing reports. Microsoft KB Article 957053 provide more info on running Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 together with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 - see Issue 6.
On one of our environments, the article suggestions didn't work. As a work-around, we created an IIS Virtual Directory in the Default Website (Port 80/443) referencing the "ReportServer" path (C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS10.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\ReportServer) which allowed the Microsoft CRM 4.0 installation process to complete successfully:
We tested the reports after the installation and also after applying the latest Update Rollup (UR7) - they ran fine. This approach is unsupported.
