In the previous blog, we discussed the Image Analyzer Extension in Business Central. In this blog, we’ll see how to set up and use the Image Analyzer to analyze images effectively.
Managing product images or contact photos just got smarter. With the Image Analyzer extension in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, you can use built-in AI to automatically recognize what’s inside an image — whether it’s a red car, a wooden chair, or a smiling customer — and assign relevant attributes instantly.
This extension leverages the Computer Vision API from Azure Cognitive Services to analyze pictures, detect object types and colors, and even estimate gender and age for contact photos. The best part? It’s already built into Business Central and can be switched on with just a few clicks.
What Does Image Analyzer Do?
Once enabled, Image Analyzer automatically scans every new image you add to an item or contact card.
It suggests attributes along with a confidence score (how sure the AI is about its suggestion).
For example:
-
For an item, it might recognize “Chair – Brown – Wooden.”
-
For a contact, it could estimate “Male, Age 35.”
By default, suggestions appear only when the system is 80% confident about accuracy, but you can change this threshold if you want more or fewer suggestions.
Enable Image Analyzer extension
Note: To enable the Image Analyzer extension, you must be an administrator. Make sure that you are assigned the SUPER user permission set.
Select Search in the upper-right corner, enter Service Connections.
Enable Image Analyzer extensionEnable Image Analyzer extensionchoose Image Analysis Setup.
Choose the Enable Image Analyzer check box and then complete the steps in the assisted setup guide.
Select next.
Enable acceptance and click on next.
Click on Finish.
You can notice Item from picture line is added in the Enable/Disable Image Analysis Scenarios.
Here you can see its enabled.
Tip: The Image Analysis Setup page also lets you set your preferred confidence score (for example, 90% if you want only highly accurate tags).
Image Requirements — Before You Begin
Before analyzing images with the Image Analyzer, make sure your item pictures meet a few simple requirements. This helps the AI engine detect objects and attributes accurately.
✅ Supported image formats:
✅ Maximum file size:
✅ Minimum dimensions:
💡 Tip: Try using clear, well-lit photos with a simple background. The better the image quality, the more precise the analysis results will be.
Analyzing an Item Image
Search Item. Select Item and Open an Item Card. choose Analyze Picture
The Image Analyzer Attributes page displays the detected attributes, the confidence level, and other details about the attribute. Use the Action to perform options to specify what to do with the attribute or choose Add to item description to add the name of the attribute to the item description. For example, this action can be useful for quickly adding detail.
By default Item Attributes displays attributes where Confidence Score is above Confidence Score Threshold % defined in the Image Analysis Setup. To see all detected attributes, choose the View All Attributes action.
What You Can Do with Detected Attributes
Each attribute line has an Action to Perform field, where you can decide what to do:
| Action | What It Does |
|---|
| Ignore | Simply skips the attribute. |
| Use as attribute | Adds it as an item attribute (for example, “Color = Blue”, “Material = Metal”). |
| Use as a category | Adds it as an item category — great for organizing products. |
| Add to blocklist | Hides an unwanted suggestion permanently. Use carefully though — blocked attributes won’t appear for any items until you remove them. |
💡 Tip: If you ever block an attribute by mistake, you can go to View Blocked Attributes and delete it from the list.
