Exploring AI Functions (PowerFX) within Canvas Power Apps

Microsoft continues to bring intelligence closer to app makers with the introduction of AI Functions in Power Apps. These new capabilities allow creators to embed natural language understanding, translation, and extraction capabilities directly within their canvas apps — without writing complex code.

In my latest video, I take you through a practical exploration of these AI Functions and how they can transform the way we build low-code solutions:
🎥 Watch the walkthrough here.

Using Power FX, you can now call functions such as:

  • AIClassify() – classification of text based a set of predefined categories.
  • AISummarize() – to extract key information from unstructured data.
  • AIReply() – to be used in customer service scenarios providing a friendly response.

These functions open up exciting new design patterns for makers — think intelligent form completion, automated summaries, and multilingual support — all within the familiar Power Apps canvas.

During my own testing (in an Australia environment), I found that AIExtract and AITranslate were not yet operational, likely due to regional rollout timing. I’ll be revisiting this feature as soon as these capabilities become available locally and will share updates when I can validate them end-to-end.

If you’d like to explore the same demo setup shown in my video, I’m happy to share the solution file. Just reach out to me directly and I’ll send you a copy to experiment with in your own environment.

The addition of AI Functions marks an exciting step forward for Power Platform — bridging the gap between low-code development and generative AI in a truly accessible way.
