Dashboards in CRM
Key Technologies: Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011/2013 Online
A dashboard in CRM is an interface used for monitoring of business and sales processes and performance. A CRM dashboard provides real-time business event snapshots.
Dashboards can contain any combination of charts, lists, graphs and other components to help give users a visual view of the CRM data. There are two dashboards in CRM, User and system.
This article will explain how to create user and system dashboards and edit different properties on the components.
1. Navigate to the Dashboards section in the Dynamics CRM Online Workplace area. By default, one of the dashboards appears on the page. Click on ‘New’ to create a user dashboard.
2. Choose the layout of the dashboard
Click on ‘Create’
3. There are 4 components
- Chart
- List
- IFrame
- Web Resource
For adding chart and list components, select a View and then select appropriate chart/list from the dropdown.
For IFrame, you can provide an URL to display on the page.

Difference between User and System Dashboards:
User dashboards are only seen by the user who created them but they can also be shared with other users or teams. System Dashboards are available to all CRM users.
All users can create a personal/user dashboard. System admin can only create a system dashboard.
User dashboards are created from within the Dashboards section in the workplace section of CRM. They do not need to be published after creation. System dashboards on the other hand are created from within the Settings –> Customizations -> Customize the System section in CRM. System dashboards need to be published after creation.
Default Dashboard
After creating a dashboard, you can set it as default by selecting the ‘Set As Default’
Security roles for editing user dashboards
In order for a Dynamics CRM user to edit user dashboards, they must have a security role that grants the write privilege for the User Dashboard entity. If a user’s security role does not have this privilege, then they will not see the Edit button on the dashboard ribbon.
Navigate to Settings->Administration->Security roles to edit the settings.
Security roles for editing system dashboards
In order for a Dynamics CRM user to edit system dashboards, they must have a security role which grants the write privilege for the System Form entity. By default, the System Forms are only editable by users with the System Customizer or System Administrator security roles as they both have full privileges to the System Form entity.
