Open in Excel 101
Hello there D.M.-azing D365 Community!
We are heading on another week and on another article for Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations to read and share.
For this article, we will explore and unbox another feature which I can say one of my most used function whenever I need to upload, update and maintain data setups in Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations which is Open in Excel or sometimes coined as Excel Add-in.
First, we need to know how to integrate the Excel add-in to our D365 F&O.
1.a. Open Microsoft Excel, on action pane select Insert > Add-ins > Get Add-ins.

1.b. On search tab, key in ‘dynamics’ then select Microsoft Dynamics Office Add-in and click Add.

1.c. In the dialog box that appears, select the Trust This Add-in option. You need to specify that you trust the add-in only on the first time you run it.
1.d. Enter the URL of your Finance and Operations environment and select OK and then select Yes to confirm the change.
The above process is only a one-time setup. Once done, we can now proceed in using the Open in excel feature in D365 F&O.
2.a. Select an entity in any module then click Open in Excel. In this illustration, we will using Terms of payment.

2.b. Under Open in excel, select Terms of payment and click Download button.

2.c. Open the downloaded file. On Microsoft Excel application, click Enable editing to open the Dynamics Add-in panel.

2.d. Notice that there are only two fields available in the worksheet. To add fields, click Design and under Available fields section select the fields that you need to include in the worksheet then click Add button on Selected fields section. Click Update.

2.e. To enable update, click Refresh button.

2.f. Edit or add the necessary data and once done. Click Publish.

2.g. Once published, refresh your D365 F&O page to see the update on the data.
There are different ways on how we maintain data or setups in D365 F&O and Open in Excel is one of them. Data can also be maintained thru manual entry and thru data management framework.
For me, the advantages of using Open in excel departs us from the need to know the specific data entity that has to be updated as we only need to navigate on the setup that we want to maintain and perform the Open in excel process. It also makes the exporting and importing process faster. And lastly, it helps us to easily determine and correct the errors whenever the Publish (export) process has not been successfully completed.
I hope that you find this article as a helpful tool for you to better appreciate and understand, everything and anything, about Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations.
It will truly be a privilege if you will allow me to know your thoughts and suggestions for me to further improve the coming featured articles on our blog.
