How to activate document management for table in Dynamics 365?

Before you can attach documents to records or generate documents from a record, you must activate the document management functionality and then you must activate document management for specific tables.

1-activate document management

Go to user option /preferences/miscellaneous /document handling 

checked enable document handling 


2-Specify a document archive directory and max size if you need 

Click Organization administration  > Document management > Document management parameters.


in general tab, assign max size file in Megabytes and office web apps server


also as a mandatory step, you must setup number sequence 


3- add file types that you can be attached 


also, you configure SharePoint storage 


4-Create the document types 

Document types are required for document management and are used to categorize the documents
Click new to select the type and  assign a description in the name 


In the class:: Select the action that occurs when a user creates an attachment 
select the category for document type if you need 

Attach file â€“ Attach a reference to a document by file
Attach URL â€“ Attach a reference to a document by using a URL.
Attach simple note– Attach a reference to a document by notes.

select the  group your document type 


set the location for this document type 


Azure storage– Documents of this type are stored in the Azure storage.
Database â€“ Documents of this type are stored in the Microsoft Dynamics 365 database.
SharePoint â€“ Documents of this type are stored in a SharePoint document library.

for removal action, you can remove reference only or remove the reference and physical 


for remove document and physical file, you can activate the ask for confirmation before remove

5-Specify document content type

Content types are used to categorize documents that are not attached to records. Examples of unattached documents might be invoices, expense reports, or purchase orders. 

Click Organization administration  > Document management > Document content type.


6-activate document management for specific tables


now document management ready for the specified tables.
