Two Key Fields on Item Ledger Entry

In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, the Open and Remaining Quantity fields within the Item Ledger Entries are essential for tracking the lifecycle of inventory.

1. The 'Open' Field

The Open field is a Boolean (True/False) indicator that shows whether an entry still has quantity available to be used or closed out.

  • Inbound Entries (Purchases/Output): An entry stays Open as long as there is stock left to be sold or consumed. Once the quantity is fully applied to outbound transactions, the field is automatically unchecked (Closed).

  • Outbound Entries (Sales/Consumption): An outbound entry remains Open until it has been applied to an inbound source.

2. The 'Remaining Quantity' Field

The Remaining Quantity reflects the on-hand balance of that specific ledger entry.

  • It represents the portion of the original quantity that has not yet been consumed, sold. In other words, the Remaining Quantity tells you exactly how much of this specific receipt should still be physically in the warehouse.
