The Dynamics 365 Business Central team is happy to confirm that you can deploy Business Central on-premises on Azure SQL Managed Instance. The system requirements have been updated accordingly.

Azure SQL Managed Instance was released in September 2018, and it is a completely new service tier of Azure SQL Database.

One of our customers running Dynamics NAV 2017 on Azure SQL Managed Instance gave these reasons for choosing Azure SQL Managed Instance over Azure SQL Single Database or Elastic Pools:

  • Dedicated and isolated Azure SQL with (mostly) full access to the SQL instance,
  • Great performance and high availability,
  • Allowed SQL replication to the customers on-premises SQL server through site-to-site VPN for as-fast-and-as-update-as-possible reporting solution, and
  • Allowed database migration through SQL backup file (bak), instead of bacpac import

Over the last few months, the Dynamics SMB team has been testing compatibility with this new version of Azure SQL Database, and we are now proud to announce compatibility for

  • Dynamics NAV 2016,
  • Dynamics NAV 2017,
  • Dynamics NAV 2018, and
  • Business Central on-premises
