We operate in a manufacturing environment where certain products must be consumed from a single lot for production orders. For example:

If a production order requires 10 units of a product, we cannot split that across lots — we need a single lot with at least 10 units.

The issue:

We might have 2 lots, one with 8 units and one with 4 units.
Business Central sees a total of 12 units on hand and assumes we have enough stock.
In reality, we don’t have a single lot with 10 units, so we cannot fulfill the requirement without ordering more

Question:

Is there a way in Business Central (standard or via an extension) for the Planning Worksheet to plan based on lot quantity availability rather than total inventory quantity?

If not, is there a way I can make this suggestion?

Standard Business Central planning logic does not consider lot-specific availability when calculating inventory sufficiency. It only looks at total available quantity.
Reason:-

Business Central’s Planning Worksheet and MRP/MPS logic operate at the item level, not at the lot level.

It assumes that if total inventory ≥ required quantity, the demand can be fulfilled — even if the quantity is split across multiple lots.

There is no native validation for “single lot sufficiency” in standard planning.

Workaround Options
1. Custom Lot Availability Validation (Extension Required)
You can develop a custom extension that:

Hooks into the Planning Worksheet or Production Order creation.

Checks if any single lot has the required quantity.

Flags or blocks planning if no such lot exists.

This can be done by:

Extending the Item Availability by Lot logic.

Adding a validation routine before production order release.

This is the most accurate and scalable solution for your scenario.
2. Use Bin Content Filtering

If you're using basic warehouse management, you can simulate lot control via bin content.

Assign each lot to a separate bin and use bin filters to control consumption.

This is a workaround and not a true lot-based planning solution.

This is not possible in Standard BC, but you can customize the planning worksheet logic to verify this. You can request it, but I doubt this will be applied

Business Central planning checks total qty, not lot-by-lot. To enforce single-lot availability, you’ll need a customization to the planning logic — best done with a certified Microsoft partner.
