Title: Transitioning from Visual Studio 2019 to 2022 for Dynamics 365 Development – Need Guidance

Post:

Hello Community,

I’ve been actively working on Dynamics 365 technical development using Visual Studio 2019 Professional, but my license has recently expired. I’m now planning to install Visual Studio 2022 and would like to ensure a smooth transition.

I understand that Microsoft supports Dynamics 365 development in VS 2022 starting from Platform Update 60, and I’d appreciate your insights on the following:

  • Is Visual Studio 2022 fully compatible with Dynamics 365 (especially Finance and Operations)?
  • Are there any specific extensions, setup steps, or best practices I should follow?
  • Has anyone faced any challenges or performance issues after switching?
  • Any recommendations for configuring the environment efficiently?

Your feedback will be really helpful as I prepare to upgrade my development setup.

Thank you in advance!

Best regards,
Santosh Kumar

Based on the screenclip shared responding to the set of questions:
    1. You need a Visual Studio license (Professional or Enterprise) edition.
    2. You need a Visual studio subscription license (Grants access to the development tools access for D365 FO and some azure credits for development and testing in case of integration).
    3. Visual Studio 2022 is fully compatible with D365 FO since platform update 10.0.60.

Note: In case of UDE note if you don't have a good host machine then you will encounter performance issues. (A good host machine running Windows 11 with minimum 16 GB RAM).

Hope this helps. Happy to answer questions, if any.

    A few things to add:
    • The extension is called Finance and Operations (Dynamics 365). You can find the installed in service update packages from Microsoft.
    • There used to be a problem with saving of SSRS reports in VS 2022. I don't know whether it's still there or it was fixed. Unfortunately, Microsoft isn't very agile when it comes to fixing bugs in F&O dev tools, therefore it likely hasn't been fixed yet.
    • Note that projects created in VS 2019 can't be opened in VS 2022 (due to a different version of build targets) and Microsoft didn't provide any automatic upgrade. As far as I know, the only way is editing the project file by yourself. Nevertheless writing a script to update all projects would be simple (if you have the need).
