No. Series - Sharing the same sequence

(10) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by 683
I am working on a situation where there are 3 different Sales Order Types with their distinct prefixes:
  • EQ
  • PG
  • TC
I know I can set up separate No Series for each of these types, but what if I want them to share the same numerical sequence?  For instance:
  • EQ046027
  • PG046028
  • TC046029
  • PG046030
I don't see anywhere in the No. Series setups or Relationships where I can choose one as the "master" for shared numerical sequencing, then just add the correct prefix based on the selected Series.

Only thing I can think of is to setup each No. Series separately with the same numerical ranges, and add some AL Code and synchronize the Last Date Used and Last No. Used values for each Series every time a new Sales Order is entered.

Is there a better way that I am overlooking?
I have the same question (0)

I actually have the same question as it relates to Invoices & Credit Memos.  Each will start with a different prefix, but should share the same number series:
    • I104360
    • C104361
    • I104362
We are migrating to BC from Dynamics SL, and this is how SL is handling the numbering sequences.  Would prefer to follow the same approach in BC if possible.

    Hello,

Out of the box, Business Central does not support shared numbering across multiple No. Series with different prefixes. A small customization is required - this can’t be achieved with standard No. Series setup alone.  You can customize this with AL code to enforce a shared counter and update each series’ last number.

Hope this answer will help you!

    Hi,

Business Central's No. Series framework doesn't natively support shared numerical sequencing across multiple prefixes. Each No. Series maintains its own Last No. Used, so even if you define similar ranges, they increment independently.

Hence, Customization should be the right approach.

No, you cannot do that in the standard BC, you need to do some customization to achieve that.

No Series can't do what you're asking. It requires a customization similar to what you've suggested.

    Hi,

By Default this feature is not possible. You can do one thing that simply create a New Field (Sales Order Type) and you can make it's category as "Options"
         List of Options Could be:
              1- EQ
              2- PG
              3- TC
After that you can fulfill your Requirement.

There is no solution other than customization. Or you could consider manual numbering, but that's not very practical.

    Thanks.

Business Central does not support a shared numeric counter across different No. Series out of the box. Each No. Series keeps its own Last No. Used, so you cannot have EQ/PG/TC pulling from the same running number automatically.

If you want a sequence like EQ046027 → PG046028 → TC046029, you need to handle it with custom AL code:

    • Create one “master” No. Series to hold the numeric sequence.
    • In your extension, when a new order is created, pull the next number from the master series and prepend the prefix (EQ/PG/TC) based on the order type.

This way all prefixes share the same number stream, while still showing the distinct prefix.

Not out of the box. You can build a customisation that add a prefix to the number series.

Add some more information: If you want to customize, you can consider combining the No. Series that need to be updated first. For example,
Dynamics 365 Business Central: How to combine the No. Series with the date (No Customization)

Then update their Last No. Used at the same time.

    Thanks.
