Email templates - Dynamic data from Multiple tables

We are trying to create an email template which will be used from a custom table.
The template starts off addressing the customer from the "to" field, which means the dynamic data looks something like this

Dear {!Contact:Salutation;}

Later in the template we are trying to pull through a balance from the custom table like so

You currently have {!Initial Repair Period Claim:Current Balance;} available.

So are you can see there are two tables being used in this template.

When we try to use the template, it will render the customers salutation, but not the balance. Or if we don't select someone in the "To" field first, then choose the template, it doesn't render the customer salutation (because we didn't select one) but will render the balance from the custom table.

Is this an limitation on the OOTB Email Template system? Or am I missing something?

    Yes, this is a limitation of the out-of-the-box (OOTB) email template system in Dynamics 365.
    It can only use dynamic data from one primary record type at a time — the one selected when the email is created (e.g., Contact or your custom table, but not both).

    Workarounds:
    • Use a workflow/Power Automate to populate the email with data from both tables before sending.
    • Create a custom email generation process that merges data manually from related records.
    • If always sending from the custom table, link the Contact as a lookup field and pull their data through that way.
