Duplicate forecast periods visible when viewing a Sales Forecast

Hello,
  • We're using Dynamics 365 Enterprise.
  • We recently enabled "Sales Forecasting" and we have 2 active sales forecast configurations: 1 user hierarchy and 1 sales territory.
  • Each forecast config has 4 quarterly periods defined.

Here's a problem I cannot figure out:
When a forecast user or manager is viewing one of our two active forecasts and they use the the out of box forecast period selector dropdown, there are 24 forecast periods visible there and many are duplicates.
If the forecast I'm viewing only has 4 quarterly periods configured, I would expect to see ONLY the periods specific to the forecast I'm viewing, in this case, 4 fiscal periods.
Why am I seeing a bunch of periods that aren't related to the forecast I'm viewing?
How do I filter that dropdown to only show the periods that are configured for the specific forecast that I'm viewing?

Is it possible we're seeing 24 periods in that dropdown because we created a bunch of test forecast configs with various forecast periods defined?
All of our test configs but have since been deactivated and/or deleted, yet we still see 24 periods in that dropdown.

I've combed though the MS learning articles and find nothing that explains the underlying data architecture of a sales forecast period.
Like, is a distinct forecast period record with a unique ID created every time I create a new forecast configuration and define the periods?  If so, what's the table name?
In addition, I can't find any topics dealing with that forecast period selector dropdown or why I might be seeing a bunch of extra periods there.

Need some guidance here - Thanks a million!
