No longer able to track emails with Dynamics 365 App for Outlook

Hi,

For the past 3-4 weeks, we have had issues with tracking emails from Outlook towards Dynamics 365 CRM.
It has stopped working all of a sudden, with no major changes being preformed to the system.

When we set an email for tracking, it goes into a pending state, before it eventually times out and fails with this error message (Company name censored).:

"stack": "Error: Unable to retrieve Exchange Mailbox Item Context from ExchangeProvider\n    at new t (https://CENSORED.crm4.dynamics.com/crmmailapp/scripts/shim.js?v=1.2.914:1:3581)\n    at e.reportError (https://CENSORED.crm4.dynamics.com/crmmailapp/scripts/shim.js?v=1.2.914:1:187878)\n    at https://CENSORED.crm4.dynamics.com/crmmailapp/scripts/shim.js?v=1.2.914:1:613201\n    at async Promise.all (index 1)\n    at async Promise.all (index 0)",
      "message": "Unable to retrieve Exchange Mailbox Item Context from ExchangeProvider",
      "code": 2147873296,
      "componentName": "AppChecker",
      "innerError": {
        "message": "Atachments found. EWS disabled, fall back to SSS sync cycle",
        "code": 2147873296,
        "componentName": "MailboxItemProvider.getAppointmentAttachmentIds"

I have checked EWS status for both a user that received the error message above, and on for the org. Results below.:

Running:
Get-CASMailbox -Identity User@DomainName.com | Select EwsEnabled

Returns:
EwsEnabled
----------
      True

Running:
Get-OrganizationConfig | FL Ews*

Returns:
EwsAllowEntourage                 :
EwsAllowList                      :
EwsAllowMacOutlook                :
EwsAllowOutlook                   :
EwsApplicationAccessPolicy        :
EwsBlockList                      :
EwsEnabled                        :
EwsOperationAccessPolicyEnabled   :
EwsOperationAccessPolicyAllowList :
EwsOperationAccessPolicyPopulated : False

EwsEnabled being blank, should mean it follows default settings, which would be True.

What can be the cause of this?

    Hey @PerezAguiare

    Thanks for your answer.
    My understanding was that the feature of creating new contacts directly from Outlook into Dynamics would become deprecated, not the entire D365 app for Outlook. And therefore my thought was also that email tracking would remain functional.

    Is that a misunderstanding on my part?
    And if so, what would be the solution moving forward? Switching from Outlook Classic to New Outlook?

    Hi @NHA_SC

    Have you been able to resolve this issue? We’ve been experiencing the same error since last week. It seems to occur only when tracking appointments and saving them to D365 CRM — and even then, not consistently.

    I’ve raised the case with Microsoft Support. They asked me to test it in the New Outlook and the web version. We couldn’t reproduce the issue there. However, our company isn’t ready to move to the new client yet.

    Interestingly, Microsoft Support mentioned they might not investigate issues with the classic client — or at least not as a priority — even though it’s supposed to be supported until 2029.

    Thanks,

    AZ

    Did you end up finding a solution, seeing the exact same issue here as well.

    I didn't manage to find any consistent solution for this, especially since it out of the blue has started working on/off again.
    It seems to work for now, but with a very degraded performance, compared to earlier. Tracking mails/appointments and saving them to D365 seems to take a lot more time to process, than it used to, for no particular reason.

    We as a company are also not ready to move to the new client and will be sticking to Classic Outlook.

    Same issue here. My mails were tracking completely fine from the D365 app in Outlook Classic, now they are suddenly not tracking at all anymore. If I go through OWA in my browser it works fine. No errors in the warnings on my mailbox in D365. A new test & enable has also completed just fine. Unfortunately I am unable to activate the "show untracked in timeline" as we are using an on-prem Exchange install with a configured connector, so this requires me to open up everything in OWA after sending from my normal Outlook client. Very very annoying, and a broken core functionality to me.

    Hello,
    We are facing to the same issue when we try to track a email "attachement found" :

    [MailApp.Dispatcher.ExternalContext.MAIL_CONTEXT.ATTACHMENT_IDS.GetValue]Message: Get external context property Failed. Reason: Atachments found. EWS disabled, fall back to SSS sync cycle

    Environment:
        â€¢ Dynamics 365 CE On‑Premises 9.1.42 (IFD)
        â€¢ ADFS authentication
        â€¢ Exchange Online
        â€¢ Dynamics 365 App for Outlook (CrmMailApp MSAL)
        â€¢ Azure AD + Microsoft Graph

    We can't deploy it if we can't track any email : for me it's a HUGE regression depreciation feature.
