1. The client will use five or six simple locations in Business Central. How can storage capacity be defined for each location—for example, Location A with a maximum capacity of 2,000 units and Location B with 2,500 units? Does Business Central provide standard location-level capacity management, or is customization required? If customization is required, what fields, validations, and monitoring logic should be developed?

The client will scan each item’s Serial Number and an additional unique identifier using barcode scanners. The scanned data will be maintained in an Excel file and imported into Business Central during purchase-order receiving. Upon import, the system should validate the data and automatically assign both identifiers to the relevant purchase order lines and Item Tracking Lines. Where should the Import Excel action be placed in Business Central, and what functional and technical logic should be developed to support this process?

3. The serialized items have operational lifecycle statuses, such as Available, Assigned, Damaged, Retired, and Quarantine. The devices also undergo inspections with separate inspection statuses, such as Pending Inspection, In Progress, Passed, and Failed. At what level should these statuses be maintained in Business Central—for example, on a custom Serial Number Information Card or a separate Device Record? Should the Device Lifecycle Status and Inspection Status be maintained as two separate fields on the same record, with validation rules controlling which combinations and status transitions are allowed?

For 1) Business Central does not provide standard maximum-capacity control at the Location level for simple locations; standard capacity control is available at the bin level (quantity/cubage/weight) when using Directed Put-away and Pick, so if the requirement is simply “Location A = 2,000 devices, Location B = 2,500 devices,” customization is appropriate: add Maximum Capacity to Location, calculate Current Capacity Used (for serialized devices this could simply be inventory quantity if every device consumes one capacity unit), derive Remaining Capacity / Utilization %, and validate receipts, positive adjustments, and inbound transfers so they cannot exceed the maximum, with warnings or a monitoring page for locations nearing capacity.

2) Standard BC supports Serial/Lot/Package tracking and barcode scanning, but there is no standard Excel-import action on Purchase Orders that automatically creates Item Tracking Lines, so I would add an Import Tracking Excel action on the Purchase Order (header is preferable if one file contains multiple PO lines), import into a temporary staging table, validate PO number/line, item, quantity, Serial No., duplicate Serial No., duplicate additional identifier, and Item Tracking Code, then create the tracking through the standard item-tracking/reservation logic; if the second identifier represents another trackable identifier, consider whether standard Package No. fits the business meaning, otherwise store it as a custom field related to the serial number.

3) For serialized equipment, I would normally extend the standard Serial No. Information record rather than create a duplicate device master, because Microsoft already provides this card specifically for additional information such as condition/quality information; add separate enum fields such as Device Lifecycle Status and Inspection Status, plus the additional unique identifier, and enforce allowed status combinations/transitions. If inspections must retain history (multiple inspections, dates, inspectors, results, notes), create a separate Device Inspection child table linked by Item No. + Serial No., while keeping the current inspection status on the Serial No. Information record; the standard Blocked field can also be used where a status such as Quarantine should prevent transactions.
