Dear team,

Layer is no important more for development. It is actually used internally by Microsoft for patching and updates in D365FO.

Am I correct?

    Hi CU05031448-0,

To add to what Andre said, layers are equally important and following is the purpose of each of them. From a Microsoft support standpoint and for future references, models are important and are purpose-based. Also, from a best practice stand-point its better to identify the layer, based on the requirement.

USR - User level modifications such as reports.
CUS - If you are extending or developing only for a specific organisation (Organisation specific components) then CUS layer is layer. Not recommended for re-use
VAR - Industry specific solutions as per requirements of the customer.
ISV - Independent software vendor used for creating own solutions.
SLN - Solution layer for vertical partner specific solution.
    GLS - Localization specific components.

Usually, from a development stand-point if you are extending or customising components the layers that you will be adhering the requirements to will be CUS, VAR or ISV.

Hope this helps. Happy to answer questions, if any.

    Hi,

Agree with all below. Depending on your role, if you are a partner/ developer, it changed to leverage on extensions.

I think Model store layers” (CUS, USR, VAR, ISV, etc.) are no longer something you as a partner/developer really work with.

    Thanks

Agree with you and Andre, layers don’t matter . We shoudl still follow best layer for our model. If are building an ISV solution, use the ISV layer. Normal Project model can be created in USR layer.

    Hi ,

I have corrected the tag you used in the categories from Microsoft Dynamics AX to Dynamics 365 Finance as your question is about Dynamics 365.

The layers aren't that important, but you can still use them for the purpose they had. In particular cases when there is a conflict, a CUS layer might still have priority over e.g. an ISV layer. For extending inventory dimensions, Microsoft mentions using layers, but doesn't give any additional comment why: Add new inventory dimensions through extension - Finance & Operations | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Learn

The Microsoft controlled layers are used to determine if a model is locked for overlayering. So far, it looks like Microsoft is only using the SYS layer now.
