Assemble to Project - no MRP for components of the Assembly Order?

How is demand generated for components of an Assemble to Project item?

From what I read and can understand, there is no MRP run for the components and therefore BC is not able to calculate if we are running short of inventory or not for such component items. To me, if there is demand on a Project planning line for the parent item which creates an Assembly Order, surely BC could be able to identify if there is sufficient inventory of its components by running and including that in the MRP engine of BC?

I certainly do not want to be exploding all the bill of materials on the project planning lines just to create the demand for them.

If that is the case, what workarounds have users used or possible ISVs?

You should be able to use the planning worksheet and it will do what you need. Below is an example:

    My project planning line:

My SKU Settings for that Item (Assemble to stock replenishment), SKU is set for MAIN location:

My BOM (there are actually 2 levels, the Item below has another sub assembly):

    My planning worksheet:

Both of my sub assemblies, the first and second level show in the planning worksheet but they show as “Planned Orders”.

As long as you have your planning settings configured correctly and they are set as Assemble-to-stock you should be fine to run it all in one place.

I also recommend this add-in that helps enhance the planning worksheet. You can view replenishment and planning settings direct from the planning worksheet page. It's free for one user even if you have multiple users in an environment: Enhanced Planning Worksheet for Business Central - I usually recommend all clients use it because it helps with planning.

    Hope that helps.
