Direct Delivery – Sales Order and Purchase Order Have Different Units of Measure (UOM)

Hi everyone,

I'm working with D365 Finance & Operations and trying to streamline our direct delivery process. Here's the scenario:

  • The sales order is created in one unit of measure (e.g., Each).
  • The linked purchase order should be created in a different unit of measure (e.g., Box), based on the vendor’s default UOM or the product’s purchase UOM.
  • I have set up the unit conversions between the sales and purchase UOMs.
  • The purchase UOM is defined on the released product and also in the vendor-specific settings.

However, when I trigger the direct delivery, the system still creates the PO using the sales order UOM, not the vendor/product default purchase UOM.

 My question:
Is there a way to configure D365 F&O so that the purchase order automatically uses the vendor’s default UOM, even when the sales order uses a different UOM?

Any insights, setup tips, or confirmation of expected system behavior would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

I have the same question (0)

    Good day,

I've done a few tests, but based on my test results I believe it is not possible in standard Dynamics 365 SCM.

Could you share something about your business scenario/requirement?

    Best regards,
    Laurens van der Tang

    Hello,

    Certainly!

    Here’s the business scenario:

We have a trade agreement with our customer where the sales price is defined per unit (UN). The customer places an order for 200 units, where each unit represents a case containing 2 boxes of 5 kg each.

This is a direct delivery setup — the product is shipped directly from our supplier to the customer.

When the sales order is created, we expect the system to automatically generate a linked purchase order to our preferred vendor for that product. Our trade agreement with the vendor is in kilograms (KG), and the vendor invoices us accordingly.

The expected outcome is for the purchase order to reflect a quantity of 2,000 KG (i.e., 200 units × 2 boxes × 5 KG).

However, the system currently creates the purchase order using the same unit of measure as the sales order (UN), rather than converting to the vendor’s default unit (KG).

Is there a configuration or setup in D365 F&O that allows the purchase order to automatically use the vendor’s default unit of measure, while maintaining a different unit on the sales order?

Thank you in advance for your guidance.

    Hello,

Thanks for sharing the business requirement/scenario. I believe it is not possible to in standard Dynamics 365 SCM. My advice is to consider a customization/extension.
