Active Journey Segments Not Refreshing

I have a somewhat complex segment that is related to contacts and their associated opportunities that is not refreshing consistently. Most of the criteria are related to the opportunities updating. Is there a way to confirm that it is set to auto refresh? I made a copy and it showed as automatic refresh, but I'm not sure if that is the default. Does something on the contact record need to change in order to refresh the segment. 
Is it a volume thing? Should I stop old segments that are no longer useful?
