Work creation history log switch on without parameter access

Hi,

To ensure the stability of our system parameters we have denied access to them all and manage any changes through a change process.

There is a need to be able to switch on the work creation log to investigate any issues. This is generally at short notice where the delay of ticket creation etc slows this process of investigation down.

Is there a method or way that we can activate ‘Enable work creation history log’ without giving access to the whole of the warehouse management parameters ?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

The following approaches come to my mind that you could investigate. It also depends how many users should turn this off and on - can you give us an approximate number?

1.: Add database log. This doesnt prevent users from changing something else, but gives you visibility what else was changed

2.: Electronic signatures slows the process of changing down. That means, when a users changes something on the table, he needs to sign it, i.e. puts in a reason. That gives him some time thinking if he really wants to make changes on the correct field. Its more an extension to the database log. Details can be found here: D365 Electronic Signatures: One of the Most Underrated Security Features | Kurt Hatlevik – Dynamics 365 Blog

3.: In case there is an entity for this parameters, you could use Power automate (PA) to restrict this. The idea is the following. You create a PA flow that is being triggered manually. The input parameters is either yes or no. The trigger is only triggered if certain people do that - you have to create a condition in your flow. The flow can be shared with the key users. Others usually wont trigger it as you havent shared it with them. Even if the flow is reshared, the condition prevents it from others doing it. Once the flow is triggered the parameter change is being done by a service user. Its an idea, I havent implemented it myself.

    Kind regards, Adis

    Hi MNaylor,

Your question is about security. Can you tell what exactly you mean by 'we have denied access to them all'? What permissions did you add to the menu item for the warehouse management parameters? Did you thereafter add deny permissions on tables, fields, and form controls? If you provide some more details what you have done so far, I can check together with you how to do this using security configuration.

Another thought: In case users need to have only one element available, have you considered creating a new form with only the option to enable or disable the work creation history?

Hi Adis, options 2 and 3 look interesting and we'll certainly look into these.

In answer to your query Andre, for example WHSParameters (display menu items) Read/Update/Create/Delete all set to Deny. We haven't explored generating a new X++ form with that ability as yet.

    Hi MNaylor,

I have checked the behavior in case you will grant read and update permissions on the menu item. Then restrict as much as possible fields of the tables using the deny permission.
This is taking away a lot of information on the warehouse management parameters, but not all. It will most likely require a customization to secure the remaining elements.

As mentioned in my previous reply, I recommend a new form with only the setting to enable or disable the history log.
