Assembling Kits in D365 finance and operation

Hi experts,
 

We have a requirement wherein we make to stock kits and such kit is having a couple of child items. Whenever one of the child items expire, we replace such child item with another one. This is to ensure that the kit is in saleable condition. By the way, the expiry date of kit is the expiry date of child item having least expiry date.

So is there a mechanism in D365 to identify which child item in a kit is expiring or near to expire to enable us to replace and keep kit in saleable condition. And also please detail out the process in D365 to prepare kits.

    Yes exactly. If you go through the production order process, your BOM items will be considered consumed. That is why, in my earlier reply, I suggested you to just stick with simple BOM, and explode the BOM items on the sales order lines directly as per their expiry.

    Thanks for responding.
     
    Just want to confirm. In short you are trying to say that in Make to stock scenario, if I assemble a kit using a production order, I will have to deal with the kits only as child items have lost their identify upon consumption. However, in the below approach I will be able to track and deal with child items until sale. And they are sold together as kit only upon sale.

    In D365, managing kits with expiry-controlled child items involves creating and managing the kit and child items as separate products. You can define the child items as the Bill of Materials (BOM) of the Kit item/Original item, and track expiry of child items using batch control. It is possible to set expiry dates for batch-controlled items and configure expiry dates as per requirement. To maintain saleable kits, you would replace expired child items by adjusting inventory. Kit item will be used in the sales order and it will pull the child items as per their batches.

    The other procedure is in the retail and commerce module, you can configure Product Kits directly here. However, this also serves almost the same purpose by configuring the child items into the kit.

    These processes will link the Kit product to child products that are expiry controlled. However, if you already have pre-assembled kits, then it is not possible to recreate them into the system, having individual batches and tracking of both the kits and the components, and then selling just the kits.
