Dynamics 365 Read Logs Storage

Good afternoon,

We have been looking at enabling Read Logs at an environment level and we can see that they go into Defenders Audit Logs. I just have a couple of questions I hoped someone would be able to help with:

1. Do read logs use Dynamics Dataverse Log Capacity?
2. If not, where are they stored?
3. If they are stored elsewhere, is there an additional cost for this storage?

Thanks 🙂

    Hi AT-03071416-0,

based on the description, find the following -in general counting- answers:

     1) Do read logs use Dynamics Dataverse Log Capacity?
No, read logs do not consume Dataverse log capacity. Dataverse auditing logs changes to records (create, update, delete) and user access. However, read operations (like viewing a record) are not included in default Dataverse audit logs. Instead, read logs are captured via Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps or Microsoft Purview Audit Logs, depending on your environment setup.

    2) If not, where are they stored?
Read logs are stored in Microsoft Defender Audit Logs (form. part of Microsoft 365 compliance center). These logs are part of the Microsoft Purview auditing solution. They capture user activities like viewing records, exporting data, or accessing sensitive information. You can access them via the Microsoft 365 compliance portal or through Microsoft Graph API.

    3) If they are stored elsewhere, is there an additional cost for this storage?
Yes, but depending. Basic audit logging is e.g. included in Microsoft 365 E3 and similar licenses. Advanced audit logging (which includes overall longer retention and more detailed logs) requires e.g. Microsoft 365 E5 or Microsoft Purview specific licensing. The storage for these logs is basically managed by Microsoft and does not impact the Dataverse storage quotas.

For more detailed information, just provide more information.

    Rg,

    Alexander

*Due to the complex and different possibilities of deploying Dynamics 365 I highly recommend not to setup the application without some expert/partner or support. (For more information contact me under anassl@inno-solutions.info or visit www.inno-solutions.de)
