SaaS BC hosted in one tenant and email hosted in another

Could anyone offer any insights with SaaS BC being hosted in one tenant and email being hosted in another? Meaning, the org would need to connect to the other tenant for email. Supported with out of the box configuration? Does anyone have any real world experience with this?
