Sales Picking: Can a License Plate be scanned instead of scanning all items individually?

Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding Sales order picking in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management.

Business Case
In our warehouse, many License Plates (LPs) contain multiple batches and/or multiple serial numbers.

During the sales picking process, when the work line quantity exactly matches the quantity available on a License Plate, we would like the warehouse worker to simply scan the License Plate ID instead of having to scan each individual item, batch, or serial number contained on the pallet.

The objective is to reduce the number of scanning transactions and improve picking efficiency for the operators.

Example
•            Sales work line quantity = 1 full pallet
•            License Plate LP000123 contains exactly the required quantity
•            LP000123 includes multiple batches and/or serial numbers
Instead of scanning each inventory dimension individually, we would like the worker to scan only the License Plate and have Dynamics automatically confirm all inventory associated with that LP.

Question
Is there a standard functionality that supports this scenario for Sales Picking Work?
This behavior seems to exist for certain inventory movement processes, where scanning the License Plate can automatically process all inventory on the pallet.
Can a similar approach be configured for Sales order picking, or would this require customization?
Has anyone implemented a comparable process?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

    Hi Lukas,

I believe that should be possible. If the quantity on the license plate doesn't match the requested quantity, the user will need to enter the dimensions, such as serial and batch numbers.

    Hi,

See we need to understand that your one license plate in your case contains multiple batches and serial numbers system would need to know which out of those batches and serial to pick.

Now I do understand your optimization effort to reduce the scan and for that you need to either change your strategy for reservation or work with smart GS1 barcodes.

Option 1 - You could have eliminated the need to scan batch and serial by simple keeping the batch and serial numbers above the location in the reservation hierarchy. I am confident in your case they both are below the location and that is why you are asked to scan them on the mobile device, If while setting up the system you would have taken care of this need and kept both batch and serial above location in the reservation hierarchy system would not have asked for batch and serial scanning at the time of picking as the determination of them would be done by system at the time of reservation automatically. You can still explore this option.

Option 2 - Work with smart GS1 barcodes. GS1 barcodes let you push multiple information by simply doing one scan. You can easily make GS1 barcodes for License plate + item + Batch and this way by simply scanning the GS1 you will be able to push data for all three fields. Serial numbers are unique for every item in that case you need to handle them with unique barcodes. In case serial numbers are shared you can also club them as part of the license plate + batch + item + serial GS1.

You can read my article which explains GS1 use for inbound. This will guide you to setup your own for outbound if you wish to do so.

Apart from this there is no other way to eliminate the need., Only option is when License plate contains only one item and only one dimension it takes things on its own.

I guess option 2 is works good for the above scenario.
