What happens to old records if a Date and Time field is changed to Date Only in Dataverse?

I have an Start Date field in Dataverse. Initially, this field was set as Date and Time with timezone behavior,Now, I changed the field to store Date Only.

I want to understand:

  • What happens to the existing records that already have both date and time stored?
  • How can I make sure both old and new records show the correct date without time in forms and the database?

The stored values in the database don’t change immediately.
Your old records still have the underlying datetime value stored.
When you flip the field to Date Only, Dataverse applies a rendering rule that hides the time part and displays only the date.
    Example:
    Original record: 2025-09-23 15:45:00 (UTC)
After change to Date Only: displayed as 2025-09-23 (time hidden).

    • Stored values do not change – the full datetime (including hours/minutes/seconds) is still in the database.

Display changes – Dataverse simply applies a rule that strips off the time portion when rendering.

    Example

    •

      Before: 2025-09-23 15:45:00 (UTC)

    •

      After switching: displayed as 2025-09-23

After changing a field from Date and Time to Date Only in Dataverse, the time part of existing records is removed, keeping only the date. All old and new records will now display correctly as dates without times, but double-check any custom forms or views to make sure they’re not still set to show the time of capcut.

Since we've had a few different answers in here, I decided to test it out for you as I wasn't entirely sure myself. I am creating and updating a field and checking the value in Dataverse through the table view, in a query with XRM Toolbox, and on a system form

Date and Time Format (User Local) field created and a value added through Power Platform

    Location Value Notes
Power Platform 12/8/2025 10:00 AM Time shown in CST based on personal settings
Query 12/8/2025 4:00 PM Value stored in Database in UTC
System View/Form 12/8/2025 10:00 AM Time shown in CST based on personal settings

Now I am going to update the field to be Date Only, and I published the table and refreshed metadata in XRM toolbox.

    Location Value Notes
    Power Platform 12/8/2025
    Query 10/8/2025 4:00 PM
    System View/Form 12/8/2025

Now, I'll change the value of this field in Power Platform to tomorrow's date.

    Location Value Notes
    Power Platform 12/9/2025
    Query 12/9/2025
    System View/Form 12/9/2025

    Summary
When a date and time field is changed to Date Only, the original value with time remains in the database until the field has been modified. When the change occurs, the time is then dropped off.
