Sales order lines with variable size and quantity - UOM and variants

Hi,

Sales order lines with variable length and quantity

We are setting up our company on Business Central, but having difficulty working out how to set up the products.

We sell wire rope by the meter. Customers can order any length of rope, they may want 1 x 25m rope or 8 x 12.5m rope for example

So the quantity and the length are both variable.

How would you recommend we do this?

Trying to void using variants...

thanks for your help

I have the same question (0)

Maybe an assembly BOM? Idea would be use assemble to order. So the qty. on the sales line is how many and the assembly order is length. User would be able to alter both values and stock is depleted accordingly.

    Hi Abi
I can think of a few ways you could do this

If you have a standard size of the rope which is more often sold then use that as an item example 1* 25 M rope
did you try the related UOM for different combinations of length and qty where you can specify UOM as meter square?

    Hi

Do you produce these items or you purchase them cut and sell?

if you produce you can use assembly or production order tp produce the length you want and QTY.

Hi, Was the raw material purchased in one piece? Inventory by square meter?

If there is a cutting process, I recommend using the assembly order proposed by Josh.

If you just buy and sell, I recommend using square meters to manage inventory, and manage length and width in Item Attribute (Or new fields).

PS: In this way of cutting, every time there is waste, it may be better to use a production module.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

This may work. Can you get the details of the required length on the sales order or is it only shown on the assembly order?

    Hi @Abi Lidd and others,

Although this post is old I will give it a try and hope you notice it and can share any possible solution.

How did you set this up in the end? We are facing the same challenge. For example, we have an item that we purchase with a length of 8 meters. Our customers can order it at any length untill the full 8 meters. Price is depending on the length.
We need an assembly or production order or something like that so my collegues know what length to cut and send to our customer.
We also want to (re)stock the remaining part if possible (and use that for a new order if the length of that order fits within that remaining part).

Looking forward hearing from you all. Many thanks in advance.
