Managing One-Time Products in D365 Without Using Variants

We're transitioning from Oracle to Dynamics 365 and have run into a major issue with how we manage one-time products in Oracle. In our current system, we often create multiple products that are essentially the same, but with different names or custom sizes, leading to a lot of clutter and duplication in the system.

As we move to D365, we're looking for a better way to handle one-time or custom products without creating a bunch of separate items for each variation. We want to avoid the issues we faced with Oracle and ensure that our system stays clean and organized.

We don't want to use product variants, so we're looking for other options in D365 to manage one-time products effectively. Does anyone have suggestions or best practices for handling this scenario in D365?

Do you need to track these one-time products separately in inventory and on orders, and / or have separate pricing?

In F&O, you either create separate Items, with Item numbering convention however you like (if set manually), or you use Product variants. Why have Product variants been ruled out?

In Dynamics 365, there are a few options to manage one-time or custom products without the need to create a multitude of separate items, avoiding the clutter and duplication you encountered in Oracle.

    1.Use of Product Configurator:
D365 offers a Product Configurator module that allows you to define a base product and then configure various attributes (size, color, etc.) on the fly for each order. This method lets you manage custom products without creating new item numbers. The configurator provides flexibility while keeping your product master data clean.

    2. Custom Product Categories:
Group one-time products under broad product categories to manage them more easily.

    3. Instead of creating a product variants you directly use Products without a variant.

Above are the just a suggestion. Actual approach will be based on your business requirement.

    Hi,

Have a look at product dimensions.

You have multiple inventory dimensions out of the box you can use for variations, including sizes, colors and versions.
    Name might be problematic....
