Manufacturing - work centre is a long distance away (over 40 kms)

We have a work centre in a routing that is over 40 Kms away from the main production site (its not a subcontractor but part of the company). Using picks and routing link codes is not a great way to keep track of the inventory when the components for that work centre are required. The components are kept at the main production site and a pick is created and sent to the work centre 40 miles away when that operation is required. Is there a more optimal method to get the components to that work centre for that step in mfg (to keep a better track of the items) and secondly return the semi-finished product back to the main site for the next stage in the routing?

    Thanks @Ben - I like your option 2 but unsure this will work as the components at location is on the manufacturing setup card (and only allows 1 default location) while the work centre itself defines the location code of the work centre. Thus, I think BC would still try to pick from L1 in your example rather than L2. Unless you have a customization or other for components at location on the work centre card?

    Two out-of-the-box options, which do not require customization:
     
    1) Use separate Locations with Stockkeeping Units and Multiple Production Orders:
    Output your WIP Item from a Production Order at Location 1.  Transfer the WIP Item to Location 2.  Consume the WIP Item to produce either a secondary WIP Item or the Finished Good.  Transfer the WIP/FG back to Location 1.  The Planning Worksheet can suggest all required Production Orders and Transfer Orders, as well as component purchases.
     
    2) Sticking with the separate Locations but using a single Production Order:
    I would recommend using Bin Mandatory at each Location and setting the Components at Location on the Work Center Cards.  This way the single Production Order creates component demand at the different Locations.  Instead of a Pick being generated from Location 1 for production at Location 2, the Pick will be created for Location 2.  A transfer order would be utilized to move the product from L1 to L2 ahead of time, so it is ready for Production based on the Route.  Again, the Planning Worksheet can suggest with the Prod. Order Creation and the component purchases and transfers.
     
    If you stick with your current setup, you should increase your "Move Time" on the Route to account for the long transportation time required during the Pick.

    Hi 

    As in Std. W1 Business central doesn't have a functionality to handle this Scenarios. I would suggest to go for a customizations. 

    Option 1:

    Create a Location for Shop Floor - Create a production order in Stores location. - Create a transfer order from store location to Shop floor location for the components needs to be consumed for the production process. tag the transfer order line with production order components with help of reservations. 
     
    Once the production is completed post the output in Main location and consumption from the shop floor location to reduce its inventory this will be handled with help of creating the SKU for the locations. 
     
    Option 2: 

    Subcontracting Module (not a global function but available in INDIAN Version of Business central). 

    Create the far way location as a vendor and vendor location. map the work center as subcontracting. system will create a subcontracting order. 

    In subcontracting order you can transfer the components from our stores location to vendor location (Our production location). 
    once the FG is ready make the recive option and it will consume the quantity in Shop floor location and post out put to stores locations.

    I would suggest to go with Option 2 customization which will be more matching your requirement and need.
