Multisite Manufacturing

Hi:

Multisite manufacturing is a must.

A Subassembly's Routing contains Work Centers at Location Code 1.

We should be able to enter a Sales Order at Location Code 5 and have the Planning Worksheet create a Planned Production Order for Location Code 1 as well as a Transfer Order to Site 5.

Unfortunately, by design of the system, the Location Code in the Planning Worksheet is the same as the Location Code in the Sales Order.

So, a Sales Order entered at Location Code 5 has the Planning Worksheet create a Planned Production Order for Location Code 5 and no Transfer Order at all.

Even using a Stockkeeping Unit (SKU) doesn’t change how Location Codes are assigned in the system.  Doing so only provides Planning parameters for component items at a specific Location Code.

Would Routing Link codes fix this?  If not, what’s the fix that allows for true multisite manufacturing?

Thanks!

John

Customization Required: without it, you can't fully automate the cross-location production planning in Business Central and that SKUs or Routing Link Codes won’t solve the issue on their own.

Hello, Business Central does not support true multisite manufacturing where a Sales Order at one location triggers a Production Order at another. The Planning Worksheet always creates the Production Order at the Sales Order location. Workarounds include customization to modify planning logic using SKUs for transfer planning (though they don’t trigger production at another site).

Hope this answer will help you!

    Hi John,

Business Central standard does not have this functionality. In the past, I worked on a project where the requirement was for multisite functionality, where orders produced at one location are shipped to another location via transfer orders for customer pickup. This can be achieved with a small amount of custom code.

So  build regular process map and then development for multi location transfer.

    Thanks
    Ramesh

    Hello,

In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Routing Link Codes alone won't resolve the issue of creating Planned Production Orders and Transfer Orders across different locations from a single Sales Order. The system's design ties the Planning Worksheet's Location Code to the Sales Order's Location Code, which limits multisite manufacturing capabilities.

To achieve true multisite manufacturing, you may need to implement customizations or use advanced planning tools that allow for more flexible location management. This could involve setting up specific workflows or extensions that automate the creation of Transfer Orders and Planned Production Orders based on predefined rules and conditions.

Wow, all the AI answers have this 100% wrong.

Standard, Out-of-the-box Business Central will handle this scenario without issue.

The Sales Order creates demand at Location 5, which Planning will suggest a Transfer Order from Location 1 to Location 5, which creates Demand at Location 1, which will suggest a Production Order at Location 1.  If you are not seeing this result, you have an issue with your data, not a limitation of the software.

There are many posts on these forums where I have walked through how to setup the system for this exact scenario.  Please use the search functionality to find those details so you can improve the use of the system for your client.

P.S. As I have told you before, the Routing Link Code has no relation to the Location, other than a Work Center with a Location Code defined on its record.  The Production Order Location is determined by the Stockkeeping Unit for the Finished Good and Sub-Assemblies.
