Dynamics GP Microsoft main stream support clarification

Hello ,

Currently we are in Dynamics GP 18.4.1361(Oct 2021). It would be really appreciated if someone can confirm on below , Thanks in advance.

  • Is our current version 18.4.1361(Oct 2021) under Microsoft main stream support ? If not then what is the latest version that we should be in to qualify for that ?
  • As of today what would be the last version that Microsoft main stream support ends ?

According to below link , we are little confused on statement marked yellow. When it says stay current by taking at least one of the three versions each year means , do we have to be in one of those 3 versions of current year ? For ex: We are currently in October 2021 , does that mean this year do we have to upgrade to one of June/October/December versions of 2022 ? Subsequently every year ?

Reference : https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics-gp/terms/lifecycle

The current version of Dynamics GP, version 18.x, is governed by the Modern Lifecycle Policy. The Modern Lifecycle Policy offers support and servicing, including bug fixes, and latest tax updates. Under this policy, Dynamics GP customers stay current by taking at least one of the three all-inclusive Dynamics GP updates, typically released in June, October, and December each year. The updates will typically consist of hotfixes, tax updates, and any relevant regulatory updates. The updates can also include changes in usability or reliability to address top customer issues, and other areas that are critical in making sure that businesses run successfully on Dynamics GP.

    hi

I can confirm that your current version of Dynamics GP, version 18.4.1361 (Oct 2021), is under Microsoft's mainstream support. The mainstream support for Dynamics GP 18.x ends on October 10, 2023.

Regarding the statement marked in yellow, it means that to stay current with Dynamics GP, customers should install at least one of the three all-inclusive updates released in June, October, and December each year. However, this does not mean that customers have to upgrade to one of those three versions of the current year. For example, if you are currently in October 2021, you do not have to upgrade to one of the June/October/December versions of 2022. You can choose to upgrade to any of the three versions released in a year.

However, it is generally recommended to stay current with the latest version of Dynamics GP to take advantage of new features, enhancements, and bug fixes. Microsoft recommends upgrading to the latest version of Dynamics GP at least once every three years to remain eligible for mainstream support.

Thanks Daniele for your response but i am trying to understand one of your statements, that you mentioned mainstream support for Dynamics GP 18.x ends on October 10,2023 but i see in above link that Dynamics GP 18.x is governed by the Modern Lifecycle Policy and the support policy is stated as below in which they didn't mention any retirement date for support. I really appreciate your help if you can clarify on below, also if you can share reference link to what you mentioned that will be really helpful . Again, thanks in advance.

Terry Heley talked about this in a post a couple years ago:

    community.dynamics.com/.../the-exciting-future-of-microsoft-dynamics-gp---lifecycle-update

This is probably the most important statement in the post:

Since the October 2019 release, Microsoft Dynamics GP follows the Modern Policy. The Modern Policy offers continuous support and servicing, including bug fixes, new features and the latest tax updates. *Customers may stay current by taking at least one of the three yearly planned Dynamics GP releases.*

My process around these updates is to always do the fall update. If something breaks with that update, then I'll do the next update if it fixes it.

    I hope this helps.

Based on my research and communication with Microsoft, as of now, my understanding is that “Staying current” is a recommendation to take advantage of new features, enhancements, and bug fixes. If you are using older version of GP that is older than 1 year and need help to resolve issues in GP, you can still open Support case with Microsoft and they will provide best effort assistance.

If you have issues due to bugs that were resolved in newer GP version, then Microsoft Support will not be able to fix those bugs in the older version. If you have issues due to lack of new features that were added in newer version of GP such as new 1099 features or Modern Authentication for Email functions, Microsoft Support will not be able to add those features in your older version of GP. In such cases, you will need to find workarounds or upgrade to latest GP version.

    Hi All

Just to clarify, versions of GP which have a year in the name (anything earlier and including v18.0) are on a fixed lifecycle and have an ending date for both mainstream and extended support.

Versions of GP which no longer have a year in the name (v18.2 onwards) are on the modern lifecycle. It is important to stay within the last two modern lifecycle versions to get all the new features and fixes and to simplify the upgrade process by only needing a single step upgrade.

This is explained in the article: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics-gp/terms/lifecycle

Please note that the Modern Lifecycle version of GP (v18.2 or later) does not have an end of support listed on the lifecycle page (the same as all other modern lifecycle products).

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/dynamics-gp

The last published product roadmap shows plans for GP continue to 2028 AND BEYOND. This roadmap will be updated as time goes on. But it was already planning six years ahead when it was published, which is a very long time in the computer software industry.

GP has plenty of years left in it.

Thank you all for your responses but we have been informed by our partner saying that ,

"Microsoft would like you to update your GP version with one of the three releases every year.

The December release was GP18.5.  So based on your version(18.4.1361) you will need to update this year.  I have clients staying on supported GP version with they Dec year end update."
