Integrating Power BI with Dynamics 365 for Enhanced Reporting - Best Practices?

Hello everyone,

I'm currently working on integrating Power BI with our Dynamics 365 environment to enhance our reporting capabilities and provide deeper insights into our operational data. While I've managed to set up basic reports, I'm looking to leverage more advanced features and ensure a seamless data flow between Dynamics 365 and Power BI.

Has anyone here gone through this process and could share some best practices for making the most out of this integration? Specifically, I'm interested in:

  1. Best practices for data synchronization and ensuring data integrity.
  2. Tips on optimizing report performance when dealing with large datasets.
  3. Recommendations for custom visuals that effectively display operational metrics.
  4. Any common pitfalls to avoid during the integration process.

I would greatly appreciate any insights or resources you could share!

Thank you!

    Hi,
Here are best practices for integrating Power BI with Dynamics 365:
    1. Data Synchronization & Integrity:
      • Use Azure Data Lake or Dataflows for scheduled refreshes; avoid DirectQuery for large datasets.
      • Leverage Dataverse connector instead of legacy OData for better performance and schema alignment.
      • Implement data validation rules in Power Query to ensure clean data.
    2. Performance Optimization:
      • Use incremental refresh in Power BI Pro/Premium to handle large volumes.
      • Remove unused columns, and apply filtering and aggregation at source.
      • Use star schema models instead of flat tables.
    3. Effective Custom Visuals:
      • KPI, Decomposition Tree, Matrix, and Smart Narrative are great for operational insights.
      • Use Bookmarks and Drill-through for interactivity.
    4. Pitfalls to Avoid:
      • Avoid using too many visuals per page—impacts load time.
      • Don’t refresh too frequently—respect API throttling limits.
      • Ensure users have proper security roles to view data in Power BI.
