Raw material picking using wms

I have a question that I want to verify my own understanding on. My company has a scenario upcoming for the first time where instead of having one input and output location for production we are likely to want something more specific. The example is roughly like below.

line 1 input location A and input location B

line 2 input location C and input location D

etc for around 25 production lines which I believe are called resources in D365. We will only have one production out location but as you can see each production line or resource if I am correct in my terminology has 2 input locations.

my question I believe these locations need to be set on the resource but how does the system know when work is created for items which input location to move the stock to? Do we need to look to create location directives that are of the put type? Or is it somewhere else in the production configuration like the formula, route etc? This is set so it knows items need moving to the respective locations? As it’s not clear to us as usually the default is as per the input location on the warehouse.

appreciate any help

    Hello tl82,

Raw material pick is basically <pulling> the inventory to the input location for the ressource assigned to the route operation.  You will need a location directive for the <Put>, but you dont need to create multiple based on each resource location.  The system will know where to <pull> the item to, so you just need to define the <pick> location directive.

Each ressource can only have one input location.  So if line 1 has two locations, it probably has two seperate operattion (#10 and #20) to which the BOM line can be assigned.  If each operation has a different resource (A and B or C and D), the release to warerhouse will pull the BOM lines assigned to operation #10 to resource A and those assigned to operation#20 to resource B.

    Regards,

    Danny

Danny many thanks. As always brilliant response.

Couple of things. That validates what I’ve been reading then in regards to pulling to the input location on the resource. You are correct we are looking into having the separate operations and I will look then to group the work by each operation for these locations.

Question if I may? The location directive for the <Put> is the one I am struggling with in my head at least. Where do I set the location directive action  put to? As with multiple locations I am thinking maybe a zone? Or is It something else?

Hello tl82, for the location directive action, you can leave the query empty.  If you want, you can use a Zone or Location Profile but leaving it empty should work.  System knows to "pull" the items to the resource input location where it is required.

Thanks for that advice. It seemed weird as before only the one input and output locations set on the warehouse so a little new to me. I am learning bit by bit and thanks again you are a gentleman and a scholar Danny!
