Timeout error immediately after sign-on in Excel dynamic workbook with D365 Add-in

Greetings,

My users have begun experiencing the following when opening up journals in Excel using the D365 Add-in (eg. create new vendor payment journal, go to lines, click on open in Excel). Normally, they would receive and open a dynamic Excel workbook. After opening, they would already be signed into D365 F&O and the workbook would refresh the data to show the latest in their workbook.

Now, they are being faced with the Sign-in screen as seen below:

When they click "Sign in", it opens a pop-up window like when you are trying to login with EntraId credentials, but it times out with the following:

The help link just goes to a generic Microsoft "timeout" error explanation, but doesn't provide any meaningful details. I'm not able to locate any available telemetry on my end with the sign-in attempt in App Insights. We were able to identify a work-around though, which is to sign-out within the D365 Excel Add-in, and then sign back in. This seems to have cleared whatever I'm assuming saved credentials were stored in Windows, and the EntraId sign-in window is now populating with a choice of user account to login with.

But now, every time a user opens a new workbook, or even a workbook they've saved on their local PC, it requires them to Sign-in. This is new behavior that wasn't seen before 5/1/2026. No new changes were introduced in either our Prod or UAT environments (where it is also happening). Sandbox has received the most recent released PQU for our version, but Prod has not yet been updated with it. We've recently upgraded to 10.0.47 on 4/17/2026.

The only thing that remotely coincides with when we first start seeing this behavior is our license renewal date was the same day, 5/1/2026. Now I'm not saying this is correlated, but it is the only thing that stands out to me. This isn't a major issue, of course, just a nuisance that my users are having to make one more click than they used to (I know... but it is changed behavior that I don't have an explanation for). I'm interested to see if anyone else has witnessed this, or if their dynamic workbooks have always opened with the user having to sign-in before getting data.

Current version details -

Application release: 10.0.47 (10.0.2527.42)
Platform release: PU71 (7.0.7858.27)

Anyways, thank you for your time.

    Hello,

You are not the only one experiencing this behavior. The same issue has been reported by other users following the May 1, 2026 update, as described in the following article:

    https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/microsoft-dynamics-office-add-in-sign-in-issue-quick-fix-parag-chapre-ouo2e/

The root cause is related to an update in the Microsoft Authentication Library (MSAL), which can lead to timeout issues or sign-in loops.

The recommended workaround (also confirmed in the article) is:

    • Open the Dynamics add-in in Excel

    • Click on the user/profile icon

    • Select “Sign out”

    • Then sign in again

    •

In some cases, it may also help to reload the add-in frame or clear the Office cache if the issue persists.

I hope this helps unblock the situation.

    Best regards,

    @jmcmillan - I noticed same issue yesterday.

Perform below steps. It worked for me.

    • Close Excel completely (make sure no Excel processes remain in Task Manager)
    • Navigate to C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\16.0\wef
    • Delete the entire Wef folder (or at least everything inside it)
    • Reopen Excel→ The add-in cache will be rebuilt automatically

We fixed the issue with Excel add-in for 10 users with the following approach. Agree with Aymen it is a MSAL Issue. To add to what Aymen mentioned in our case the sign out and sign in only worked for certain users, however for the other users where sign out and sign in didn't work, we used the below mentioned approach.

    1. Execute WINDOWS Start key + R, which will activate the command line

     2) In addition to the wef folder contents that Nishit mentioned, clear the contents from the IdentityCache repository through command line.
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\IdentityCache\. This will open Explorer and clear the contents from this folder, too.
Sign out and re-sign into Excel and the issue should be resolved.

Hope this helps. Happy to answer questions, if any.
