Character limit of Note Description field?

I get an error message that says it's 2020,

However, I put notes much longer than 2020 and it gives me no error, and the field description says its 100,000:

But I put a note w/ 72,000 characters in, and it said that was too long.

Does anyone have a source for the actual character limit in this field?

I have the same question (0)

RE: Character limit of Note Description field?

    Hello,

I have the same problem in my CRM. If I add a very long simple text I have the error "You have exceeded the maximum number of 2020 characters in this field." despite the max lenght of notetext is 1073741823 characters. Also if I insert a simple long text for example 3000 characters this does not give problems. What is the cause of this error?

    Thanks,

    Simone

    Hi Ben,

Yes, meta-data go towards the count.

If query Notes in Advance Find, you can see tags along with the text.

    Here is an example:

I think it would be considering them as well - HTML tags.   We received it for Pen Control in description field, must be considering Base64 string

Would the metadata information go towards the character count? If so, that may be it. Also, I wonder since it is HTML in the rich text if the HTML tags get counted towards the character limit, which could also explain it (since there would be more characters in the HTML text w/ all the tags than what I saw in Word with just the text).

    Hi Ben,

You could also check if you've enabled rich text for note in system settings, if you did, then the real content in description field will be HTML code, not text.

    Hi,

Is it a rich text note?

Pleas note, rich text note saves metadata information as well.

    Hi Ben,

You can check by following advises:

1.Make sure that the number of 72,000 you enter is a character number, not a word number, because Spaces are also a character.

2.Go to field settings to change Maximum length and publish it to test again.

3.Check if Js, workflow or business rule involves this field.

There maybe another field that is being updated onchange or onsave of this record (e.g. via Javascript ) or maybe a business rule (on field change)? And that field is 2020 characters length. If that is the case, it will appear this error.

    Best Regards,

    Leo
