Query regarding supported SQL Server SP2 support in AX 2012

I understand that the latest AX 2012 system requirements for the database server are that for SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 to be installed, AX 2012 cumulative update 4 must first be installed.

As a minimum requirement: Does this apply to the kernel only, application only or both? Does this apply to the AOS only or other components (e.g. client) as well?

Our customer is on AX 2012 Feature Pack, kernel build 6.0.1108.4697 (i.e.high enough) but application build 6.0.1108.670 (i.e. CU3) so I'm wondering whether they already meet the minimum requirement for AX to support SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 or not.

Please can you advise.

Kernel and client versions must match as close as possible. The CU requirement for SQL is really needed on the AOS side only, but I definitely encourage you to keep AOS and client kernel versions the same. There have been some weird effects when those weren't the same (in previous releases of AX, haven't seen any issues or reports of issues for 2012, but I'd rather not found out :-).

The application build can be kept lower, that is not a problem.

Keep in mind that you CANNOT mix R2 and RTM/FPK (aka 6.0/6.1 vs 6.2) in any way (application or kernel).
