Sales - Timeline Bookmark Permissions - Bookmark icon not showing

I am trying to determine why only my app admin and sys admins in d365 can see the bookmark button in the timeline. No one else can see this little icon.

This timeline is configured to relate to contact, opportunity, and account.

I have tried to give a basic user1(among other non admin roles) full access to those 3 entities along with the bookmark permission. And full access to the activities entity. I have tried a handful of other permissions but nothing is working and it's pain to test enabling permissions and then refreshing/relogging every time.

Does anyone know of all of the permissions in the system that would be related to the timeline bookmark feature?

Thank you for your response but we figured out the issue! There is a permission called "Custom Control Extended Setting" (msdyn_customcontrolextendedsetting). You just need to give the role permissions to this custom table and that little bookmark icon will show up! I hope this helps someone else too.

Sales - Timeline Bookmark Permissions - Bookmark icon not showing
    Hello TB-11031945-0,

You're facing a common challenge with the timeline bookmark feature in Dynamics 365: its visibility is restricted to administrators, even when basic users have seemingly appropriate permissions. This is often due to a combination of specific privileges and underlying system behaviors.
Here's a breakdown of the likely causes and a comprehensive approach to troubleshooting:

    Understanding the Timeline Bookmark Feature:
    • System Functionality: The bookmark feature is designed to allow users to quickly access important activities within the timeline.
    • Permission Dependencies: Its visibility is tied to a set of specific privileges, which might not be immediately obvious.
    • Client-Side Rendering: The bookmark icon is rendered client-side, meaning that the user's browser needs to have the necessary permissions and data to display it.

    Troubleshooting Steps:
    1. Privilege Dependencies:
      • prvReadmsdyn_PostConfig: This privilege is crucial. The bookmark functionality is related to the Post Configuration entity (msdyn_PostConfig). Users need read access to this entity to see the bookmark icon.
      • prvCreatemsdyn_Post and prvReadmsdyn_Post: The ability to create and read posts is also tied to the bookmark function.
      • prvReadmsdyn_PostRole: This privilege is also likely needed.
      • prvReadmsdyn_PostRuleConfig: This privilege is also likely needed.
      • Activity Entity Privileges: While you've granted access to the Activity entity, ensure that the users have the following:
        • prvReadActivity
        • prvAppendActivity
        • prvAppendToActivity
      • Entity-Specific Privileges:
        • Ensure the user has prvRead permissions to the tables that the timeline is displayed on. Contact, Account, and Opportunity.
      • Miscellaneous Privileges:
        • prvReadUserApplicationMetadata
        • prvReadUserEntityUISettings
    2. Security Role Testing:
      • Create a test security role with the minimum required privileges listed above.
      • Assign this role to your test user (basic user1).
      • Test the timeline bookmark functionality.
      • This helps to isolate the specific privileges that are required.
    3. Client-Side Caching:
      • Even after granting the necessary privileges, the user's browser might have cached outdated information.
      • Have the user clear their browser cache and cookies.
      • Try using a different browser or an incognito/private browsing window.
    4. Timeline Configuration:
      • While less likely, review the timeline configuration for the Contact, Opportunity, and Account entities.
      • Ensure that there are no custom filters or settings that might be hiding the bookmark icon.
    5. User Settings:
      • There is a chance that there is a user setting that is preventing the bookmark from displaying.
      • Have the user go to their personal settings, and review all of the settings.
    6. Environment Specific Issues:
      • There is a chance that there is an environment specific issue.
      • If you have a test environment, test the user in the test environment.
    7. Microsoft Support:
      • If the issue persists, contact Microsoft Support.
      • They can investigate the issue and provide specific guidance.

    Key Recommendations:
    • Focus on the msdyn_PostConfig and related msdyn_Post privileges.
    • Create a test security role to isolate the required privileges.
    • Clear browser cache and test in different browsers.
    • Contact Microsoft Support if needed.

By following these steps, you should be able to identify the specific permissions that are required for the timeline bookmark feature.
