Master Data Management Capabilities for MS Dynamics

Hi

Had a question from a Master Data Management perspective for Dynamics:

How does Dynamics Handle Master Data - Finance, Customer, Vendor, Material ?

  • Does it have out-of-the box master data management and governance capabilities ? or are external MDM and governance systems are recommended ?
I have the same question (0)

    Good morning Ambar Patil,

You asked a quite generic question.

For that reason, it is difficult to provide you with a short answer how those data are handled because there are a lot of functions/configurations that influence how you deal with customers, vendors, products, etc.

What might help you is having a look at the MS docs sites as a starting point.

    docs.microsoft.com/.../data-entities-data-packages

There is also MS learn where you can find some information about that

    docs.microsoft.com/.../

It would be great if you could provide us with some more concrete requirements what you expect/want to implement in respect to MDM.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

    Hi Ambar,

The MDM in D365FO is built on top of DMF.

    See the blog:

The above is a broad question. But to summarize:

A good data migration strategy and access to data management tools are what you need. Microsoft has provided a lot of tools to leverage.

Data management framework in D365, along with data management tools in LCS [lifecycle services], can be looked into to help decide your data migration strategy.

In the D365 data management framework, you can use data entities, data templates, data packages, copy legal entity functionality, [when dealing with multiple entities that share data].

D365 data migration capability is extended to the use of LCS [Lifecycle services] and how you can leverage it to migrate the data within D365. E.g. data policies [for cross-company data sharing], and through user-defined data templates that can be sequentially loaded in an environment, etc.

The below links might help you understand the D365 data management framework and various tools available in LCS :

    docs.microsoft.com/.../data-entities-data-packages

    docs.microsoft.com/.../cross-company-data-sharing

no one tool to use as MDM

    could refer here microsofterpax.wordpress.com/.../

there are ISV providing more features however using combination of data management, cross company data sharing, CDS and other MS tools the goal of MDM can be achieved

    pls suggest if it helps

If this is resolved, can you verify the post(s) which have answered your question to close the query?

    Thanks,

    Hi Ambar,

Master Data Management and Data Governance can be implemented in various levels. If your requirement is only about distributing the data to other legal entities, you can use the data management features.

I'm working at an ISV partner where we think that just data distribution is not enough. In a more mature MDM environment, data stewards are responsible for creating master data and potentially review it before it gets accepted by a slave company.

Also governance is an important topic. Out of the box, there is no good support to setup your own governance policies for ensuring the correct level of data quality.

At To-Increase we do have master data management and data governance offerings which do offer much more features compared to standard Dynamics 365. Think of configuring e.g. validation rules, data enrichment, data distribution with other applications as well. All is based on configuration instead of development.
