Report Writer - Modifying default GP report issue

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by

I am a relatively new GP admin attempting to customize a trial balance report using Report Writer. I was able to find a decent video on Lynda.com that walks through the steps of modifying but unsure about security setup. I would like to be able to modify a default report and save it as another name so as not to cause issues for users while i am testing modifications. The video basically just showed how to modify the report and then save it under "Defaultuser" id which is setup for all of our users. Is there a way to save report under different name and restrict access to only myself while modifying?

Thanks for the help!

You can try to  create a new ID under "Alternate/Modified Forms and Report ID" (You can get to this through the Administration module under setup window)and assign that new ID to your name while all other users remain as "Defaultuser ID".

For the new ID created you can then choose "type" as "reports" and navigate to the respective report/reports that you want modified.

    Hi,

What I do for modifying reports is to use a totally different dictionary. Using a different Alt/Mod ID will not do the trick. You want to be able to modify and test the report without messing up the reports in production. For my workstation, I use a local Reports.dic. I have a unique Dynamics.set file that points to a local dictionary. I have two shortcuts, one that reads my local dictionary and a second that reads the shared dictionary. To directly answer your question, you cannot save the report under a different name and restrict access to only yourself while modifying. I presume you are modifying a report that you intend to have print in the place of the standard or existing report. When you get the report looking the way you want, just export the modification to a package file and import it into the production dictionary. Note that any modifications you make to base resources (formats, etc..) are not included in the package file. You'll need to use a different method, like copying over the entire dictionary, in order to transfer resource changes.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie
